Tour of Earth Matter!

Description:

Join us for a tour of Earth Matter to learn about the history and operations of our midsize community composting facility on Governors Island where we process up to 600 tons of material annually.

The tour time includes your time on the ferry. You will take the 12:00pm Governors Island Ferry to the island. After our tour finishes around 1:25pm, you can take the next ferry (at 1:45pm) back to Manhattan. You can also explore the island for as long as you want and catch any ferry (every 30 minutes) back to Manhattan.

Expect to walk about 2 miles total on the island. Our standard tour involves going over uneven surfaces (soft soil, wood chips, rocks). The nearest wheelchair accessible and private gender-neutral bathroom is at Yankee Pier. Prior to registration, please reach out to volunteer@earthmatter.org if you need accommodations or have further questions.

There is the opportunity for volunteer hours before the tour if you come for our Friday Volunteer Day. Please sign up on our calendar if you are interested.

This tour is open to everyone and counts as a Field Trip credit for the Master Composter Program.
