Volunteer Opportunities

Want a hands-on experience with composting? Come get your hands dirty and join us on a Friday Work Day.

By signing up, here’s how you might be involved:

  • Animal Care: Looking after our chickens, goats, rabbits, worms, and bees
  • Our Daily Compost: Blending greens and browns to make black gold
  • Carpentry: Supporting a variety of projects — help make a new sifter, fix paddock gates, etc.
  • Gardening: Tending to our plants and other activities for those with a green-thumb

Compost Builds

Register to Volunteer

As a volunteer for our Community Compost Builds, you will be part of creating a large pile of compost.

Join us to build a compost windrow! We will combine 15,000 lbs of neighborhood-generated food scraps with an equal amount of Governors Island yard waste. Learn about how we process these organics.

Volunteers help empty bins of food scraps, remove contaminants (plastics and other non-compostable items), and chop open whole foods to let in microbes.

CLC Open Hours

Register to Volunteer

The Compost Learning Center (CLC) is open to the public on Sundays from May 1 – October 31.

Volunteer Hours:  9:00 am – 4:30 pm

Advanced volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of things supporting the center during its open hours:

  • Animal Care
  • Composting
  • Interacting with Center visitors
  • Assisting with public info sessions and workshops
  • Triking the island to pick up food scraps

Zero Waste Events

Earth Matter supports partner organizations at their events and gives event attendees an opportunity to learn more about composting.

Our volunteers are a vital part of these events! By signing up, here’s how you might be involved:

  • Zero Waste Event Education: Set up zero waste stations, assist with organics collection, and engage with event attendees by giving tips and helping to build awareness and excitement around composting.
  • Tabling: Set up tabling areas, hand out literature on “How to Compost”, bring out our animals for compost education demonstrations, and work with attendees on hands-on activities.

Animal Care

Animal Care volunteers help keep our animals happy and healthy.

Duties include feeding, changing water, cleaning, and more. Given the importance of our animals’ well being, volunteers must go through a training process and commit to a 3-month minimum.

Contact us if you are interested and we can set up an interview.

Independent Projects

Do you have an idea for a compost-related project?

Are you a college student looking for a compost-related internship? Be sure to tell us about it when contacting us for your advanced volunteer opportunity!
