Which Backyard Composting Device is Right For You?
There are many backyard composting devices out there. How do you decide which one is right for you? The apprentices at Earth Matter’s Compost Training Program learn all about the different compost devices and how to make a good, quality batch of compost.
Rookie’s Quesadilla Solstice
This video is from Rookie’s Quesadilla Solstice and shot at 400x. In the shot is a flagellate (another general type of protozoa) feeding on bacteria. Much smaller than the ciliate we shot in the Coco’s Breakfast compost, yet still a powerful force in cycling the nutrients held in the bodies of the individual bacteria in the compost or soil.
Scaling Up Community Garden Composting
In a collaboration with NYC Parks GreenThumb, Earth Matter NY created this video for NYC community gardeners. Learn how to scale up composting in your community garden to ensure all of your garden waste and food scraps are turned into “black gold” to nourish your garden. Kimberly Brown, Marisa DeDominicis, and Natalie Sucre showcase various composting systems and share best practices at Earth Matter’s Compost Learning Center on Governors Island.
Coco’s Breakfast
The video from Coco’s Breakfast is of a very large ciliate feasting on the bacteria around a piece of organic matter. Ciliates are one general type of protozoa that are found in composts and soils. This shot is at 200x. You can see how quickly it’s moving and eating, meaning it needs a lot of food to keep up with this level of activity. Lots of bacteria being eaten and energy being expended (respiration).
