The Schror family—William, Sanae, and their son, Haruki—have been helping out at Earth Matter’s Compost Learning Center for the past three years. In the summer, they delight in spending time with the goats and taking them for walks around the Center.

Haruki, a sprightly first-grader, is particularly fond of the goats and has a ball taking care of them. Why? he was asked. “Because they are so cute!” he gleefully exclaimed. The first time Haruki showed up at Earth Matter he was just a tiny tot, toted in his father’s baby carrier. As he has grown, he has taken on more and more animal care tasks.

William, an eighth-grade teacher, is involved in the arts, notably the Tribeca Film Festival and the Fringe Festival, which are held every year in lower Manhattan. But for the whole family, the weekly visit to Earth Matter has now become a focal point for them. What began as weekend day trips to Governors Island eventually became a commitment to the project, and William, Sanae and little Haruki are dedicated volunteers. This past May, the family participated in our “make your own vertical garden” workshop, led by Joshua Hakimi. William noted that being at Earth Matter’s Learning Center has taught us “about the importance of composting and recycling”.

And Haruki wants to make sure that everyone knows that he shares his love for all the people at Earth Matter!
