New Yorkers can now bring their food scraps to Governors Island, for collection and processing at Earth Matter’s Compost Learning Center. Location is adjacent to Soissons Dock by Taco Vista.
New York, NY: Earth Matter NY Inc. today announced the opening of a new public food scrap drop off bin for New York City residents to recycle their food scraps. This public food scrap drop off offers New Yorkers a way to recycle their food scraps locally; helping to mitigate climate change.
Funding to open this drop-off site and other food scrap drop off sites arrived in late June, when the NYC Department of Sanitation received $2.8 million to reactivate the NYC Compost Project. Earth Matter NY Inc is one of DSNY’s 8 community partners that will utilize this funding to operate mid-scale compost educational facilities, provide support to some small compost sites, and reopen some local food scrap drop-off sites throughout all five boroughs.
“We are thrilled that funding was restored in the adopted budget to support our partners and to offer community-based solutions to our waste crisis. This restoration of funding has given us hope that our partners will be able to continue to do their crucial work in the long term.” DSNY Commissioner Garcia
“Through our decade long partnership with Earth Matter, we’ve demonstrated initiatives that move towards a zero-waste Governors Island,” said Clare Newman, President and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island. “We’re thrilled to see Earth Matter continue to identify new opportunities for New Yorkers to learn about the compost process here on Governors Island, while reducing their carbon footprint at home.”
“Making the effort to recycle your food scraps locally is the most basic way that each of us can help to reduce our carbon footprint.” Marisa DeDominicis, Earth Matter, NY

About the New York City Compost Project
The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are carried out by teams of DSNY-funded staff at seven partner organizations: Big Reuse, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Earth Matter NY, LES Ecology Center, The New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.
Earth Matter NY is an 11 year old 501c3 whose home base is on Governors Island. We host an educational Compost Learning Center and “farm to table” demonstration farm where we have a flock of chickens who help us process over 750 tons of organics annually. We also tend a Lavender Field, which open always for you to come by and sense the healing powers of these plants, nurtured by our soil and amazing volunteers.
