It Feels Great to Be Ten!
On March 28, 2019, we gathered with a few hundred close friends to celebrate our anniversary with a spectacular benefit party. We were truly humbled by the outpouring of love and support on display that evening and during the weeks leading up to it. What an amazing way to celebrate TEN years as New York City’s grassroots-based, composting-focused nonprofit organization!
Between private donations, the joyous party at the fabulous Starrett-Lehigh Building overlooking the Hudson River, and our online auction, you helped us raise over $17,000!
We could not have had such a successful anniversary nor accomplished all that we have in the past ten years without our many supporters and collaborators, to whom we are deeply grateful. Here’s to another ten years (at least!) of composting and community! Check out photos from the event here

EARTH MATTER is TURNING TEN!
EVENT: Earth Matter 10th Anniversary Celebration & Fundraiser
DATE: Thursday March 28, 2019
TIME: 6:00pm – 9:00pm
LOCATION: Starrett-Lehigh Building – 601 West 26th Street, NYC
TICKETS: $50 – $2,500
On Thursday March 28, Earth Matter, the nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and awareness of composting in and around New York City, celebrates its tenth anniversary with a grand party and benefit at Manhattan’s famed landmark Starrett-Lehigh Building.
There will be food, drinks, and dancing, plus a raffle and silent auction of fabulous prizes. All proceeds will help Earth Matter forge ahead into its next decade of converting everyday citizens into composters for life, and food waste into precious compost, diverting it from the landfill, and replenishing the Earth.
For ten years, Earth Matter has been boosting community composting across New York City and beyond, and promoting “zero waste” practices at their bustling Governors Island Compost Learning Center supported by DSNY‘s NYC Compost Project. In partnership with The Trust for Governors Island, Earth Matter’s “Zero Waste Island” initiative is weaving the fabric of sustainable practices that will be replicable in other NYC institutions, and beyond.
At the adjacent Soil Start Farm and nearby Lavender Field, Earth Matter puts the compost generated to good use: the farm has an intensive apprenticeship program where organic flowers and vegetables (and goats and chickens) are tended to, while the Lavender Field provides an unique, aromatherapeutic outdoor space for connecting with the Earth and our selves with lavender herb workshops, and yoga and meditation sessions.
All Earth Matter offerings at the Compost Learning Center, Soil Start Farm, and the Lavender Field are free – a great reason to come out in support of this small but mighty nonprofit organization. Those not able to attend can make donations through the Eventbrite ticket site.
The event’s unique ticket options include group tickets; some include Earth Matter memberships. Membership benefits include invitations to free members-only events including a June soirée, and a natural dye plant festival in September. More details will be revealed at the celebration.
