Volunteer Opportunities

Thanks to all our volunteers for making the work we do possible!

  • Monday Madness: This is our weekly community compost build! Volunteers help us sort through food scraps from Governors Island. The build is followed by a guided tour of our Compost Learning Center.

  • Thursday/Friday Volunteer Days: Join us on Thursdays or Fridays to help with tasks across various programming areas. Every week is different!

  • Zero Waste Events: Volunteers help us facilitate composting at special events on and off-island.

You can register for these activities through our calendar which is updated regularly. You can also sign up for our newsletter where we promote opportunities to help out.

Learn more below!

Upon registering for calendar events, you will receive an email from Earth Matter with a confirmation of your volunteer registration (check your spam folder if you do not receive a confirmation).

Earth Matter supports partner organizations at their events and gives event attendees an opportunity to learn more about composting.

Our volunteers are a vital part of these events! By signing up, here’s how you might be involved:

  • Zero Waste Event Education: Set up zero waste stations, assist with organics collection, and engage with event attendees by giving tips and helping to build awareness and excitement around composting.
  • Interactive Activities & Tabling: Work with attendees on hands-on activities, set up tabling areas or bring out our animals for compost education demonstrations.
