composting

what is compost?

Compost is a dark, crumbly material that enriches our soil. It loosens the texture of heavy clay soils, making them better for root growth, and it adds nutrients and body to light sandy soils.

When used as a completely organic fertilizer for plants,

compost is valuable for gardens in New York City.

Unlike fertilizer, compost is naturally free and energy efficient.  Compost forms when remains of organic (living) materials, such as fallen leaves, fruit and vegetable scraps, even coffee grounds and eggshells, decompose with enough air and moisture.  Composting is a natural process taking place in green spaces all around us. When a leaf falls to the ground, it passes through microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, and through larger creatures, such as beetles and earthworms. The remains become part of the soil, where its nutrients are absorbed by plant roots to help make new leaves.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling.
